What do You Want Your Website to Do For You?
It’s a simple question, but I’ve found many business owners can’t answer it. They know websites are supposed to be good for business so they build websites, but they never stop to think about what results they’re trying to achieve. Often, they end up spending time and money on a site that doesn’t do them any good.
YOU WANT TRAFFIC, TRAFFIC AND MORE Traffic
Get traffic to your garage and yard sale, you want people that see your website and think it is the most fun and exciting garage or yard sale in town. Have fun building your website and be a little CRAZY.
You are going to learn how to share your website on all your social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter etc. There are dozens of websites where you can advertise your garage sale for FREE. Post an ad on as many as you want, but aim for at least three or four. For example, you can use Craigslist, Yard Sale Search, Garage Sale Hunter, Yard Hopper, and Garage Sale Source. But you won’t have as much fun on those sites as you will on your own website, where like I said you can get a little CRAZY and use your imagination. You may have so much fun that you may want have another Garage or yard sale soon.
Where do You Get More Stuff ?
INMAR is one place you can check out. It is a liquidation and remarketing company. Seven of the top retailers choose Inmar’s liquidation and re marketing services. They have everything from diapers to dinosaurs that have been returned.
They get truck loads of stuff and resale for 25 to 40% off and it often winds up in flea markets. Consumers return 369 Billion in goods each year. That is 10% of total retail sales.
If you want to drive major traffic to your garage sale, fork up the money to pay for an ad in the local newspaper. But before you write your ad, find out how much space you get for the price you’re willing to pay. Keep your ad short and pointed, and don’t forget to include the URL for your website, you may be the only garage sale with a website. 😉
MAKE YARD SALE SIGNS
Check the laws in your area before making garage sale signs as some places have banned them. A clerk at your local police station can tell you what you can and can’t do. If you are allowed to make signs, brightly colored poster board and a Sharpie is all you really need. Make sure your sign says “Garage Sale” large enough for people to see as they drive by. Include your address or an arrow pointing towards your house.
Odds are, you’ll have to make $19.95 in change for your first customer. Make sure you have fives, ones, and at least twenty dollars in quarters. You can get them from your bank, but you’ll have to go inside a branch to do it.
SORT YOUR ITEMS
Sort before you price. It’s the easiest way to keep your garage sale organized and make it easy on your buyers. Divide all of your items by category, such as clothes, books, home goods, and kids toys.
TIP: If you have a lot of clothes, divide them by men’s, women’s, and children’s. Most people are looking for something specific and will appreciate it.
Price your Items
Price your items individually rather than just group them into boxes with one price sign. People will get the boxes mixed up and you’ll have a hard time keeping it organized. Just use a roll of manila tape and a Sharpe, which is a lot cheaper than going out and buying fancy price tags.
Arrange your tables and put all the clothes on hangers the night before. Arrange everything the night before and store in the garage. Map out where everything will be placed to make the morning setup as easy as possible and to keep it in a logical and organized fashion for your customers.
Give yourself at least an hour before the garage sales starts to set everything out and put up signs. Have your change in a safe place and find a comfortable spot to sit, as you are about to have a lot of fun.
People see garage sales as a sort of interactive shopping experience. They’re going to ask question, they’re going to haggle, so smile and have fun with the haggling and don’t act pushy.
Some people will tell you garage sales are a lot of work, but if you start off with the right mind set that you are going to have a lot of fun, you will and you will make more sales.
